The night was short, the working day hard - how can you push yourself for a workout now? With a pre-workout booster from our store! The word "boost" already says what you can expect after consuming a training booster: You'll instantly feel more alert, have more energy, and be more mentally focused.

But that's not all, because pre-workout boosters usually work on more than just the mental level. They also force the blood flow in the muscles, which leads to an increased pumping effect. As a result, the muscles are optimally supplied with oxygen, which supports muscle growth in the long term. We offer you a wide range of pre-workout boosters, which includes all dosage forms - from powder for mixing to capsules and ready-to-consume energy drinks.

But what makes pre-workout boosters so effective, and what should you look for when buying a pre-workout booster?

Pre Workout Boosters: effective "wake-up!" call before your workout

What is a pre workout booster?

A pre-workout booster is, as the name clearly indicates, a sports nutrition supplement that is consumed before a workout. It causes a short-term increased readiness to perform, both on a mental and physical level. This increased performance readiness is particularly useful in two cases:

1. when, for whatever reason, you find yourself unable to complete your workout at your usual level of performance without "aids." In this case, a workout booster can ensure that you still reach your intended set and repetition numbers with the usual training weights.

2. if you are mentally and physically at your best, but want to set new records in training. In this case, a workout booster can unlock just the reserves you need to summon the strength to set new personal bests.

Usually a Pre Workout Booster comes in powder form. Stirred into water, the powder makes a stimulating mixed drink. However, Pre Workout Booster capsules are also available in stores. If you want to buy a pre-workout booster, whether you should look for powder preparations or better for capsule preparations depends on the circumstances under which you prefer to consume your booster (see below: Capsules or powder - which is better?).

How do pro-workout boosters differ from other booster categories?

In the sports nutrition industry, a distinction is made between pre-workout boosters, pump boosters and hardcore boosters. While they all serve more or less the same purpose, namely to increase training motivation and performance readiness (which is why they are all referred to as "training boosters" or as "pre-workout supplements"), the composition and thus the specific main effect is different in each case (see training boosters). Pre Workout Boosters are characterized primarily by the fact that they drive away fatigue and provide an energy boost.

In addition, they promote to a certain extent the blood flow to the muscles, although this is more the domain of pump boosters. In any case, the distinction between the individual booster categories is not very clear-cut - at least not as far as the intended use and the spectrum of effects are concerned.

Which active ingredients are contained in pre workout boosters?

All pre workout boosters available on the market contain more or less the same ingredients, regardless of the brand. US import boosters or boosters that are not manufactured in the EU are an exception: Unlike EU workout boosters, these often contain amphetamine-like ingredients. They have a correspondingly stimulating effect and intensify mental focus. Strictly speaking, this means that they no longer belong to the workout boosters, but rather to the hardcore boosters, but US manufacturers are not so particular about the distinction between the individual booster categories.

Typical ingredients of pre workout boosters

Caffeine: Caffeine is in just about every workout booster - simply because caffeine is the most effective legal wake-up substance. However, there are also caffeine-free boosters (see below). Since caffeine not only drives away fatigue, but also boosts metabolism, caffeine has both a stimulating and performance-enhancing effect.

L-Arginine: Arginine is an amino acid that converts nitrogen-phosphate compounds into nitric oxide. This causes blood vessels to dilate, resulting in a stronger pump during exercise. In addition, L-arginine can improve the ability to regenerate.

Beta Alanine: Beta Alanine is also an amino acid. Among other things, it regulates the pH value in the muscles. The supply of beta alanine causes a delayed acidification during physical exertion, making athletes more enduring and powerful.

L-tyrosine: L-tyrosine is also an amino acid. It acts as a neurotransmitter and can improve attention, reaction speed (important for game sports!) and coordination skills; in high concentrations, it also has a mood-lifting effect.

Creatine: Creatine promotes the provision of energy at the cellular level and can provide more power, especially in anaerobic forms of training (such as weight training). However, the effect only occurs if creatine is administered regularly over several weeks. Since pre-workout boosters should not be consumed before every workout, creatine is only partially effective as a booster ingredient.

In addition, workout boosters contain various flavoring substances, vitamins and sugar substitutes or artificial sweeteners.

Pre Workout Boosters without caffeine

Finding a pre-workout booster that does not contain any caffeine at all - i.e. without Green Tea Extract, Guarana, etc. - might be difficult. There are indeed boosters that do not contain any stimulants, but these are pump boosters (and not pre-workout boosters). Athletes who want to "boost" themselves for training without caffeine must therefore turn to a pump booster. Pump boosters do not have a direct "wake-up!" effect; nevertheless, they can make a workout considerably more effective. On the one hand, they increase the energy level (thanks to ingredients such as beta alanine, creatine and AAKG), on the other hand, they ensure that a strong pump occurs after only a few sets and repetitions - and this then makes you want to train despite possible fatigue. The appetite therefore comes while eating.

How and when to take pre workout boosters?

The term alone indicates that pre-workout boosters should be taken close to the time of training. As a rule, it takes 20-30 minutes for a booster to develop its full effect. If the stomach is empty, it can go faster. Booster powder should always be stirred into water only, not into fruit juice or milk and certainly not into coffee. The exact dosage instructions are always written on the can.

Capsules or powder - which is better?

Most products in the category "Pre Workout Supplements" are in powder form. Only very few boosters come as capsules, which is due to the fact that a small, easy-to-swallow capsule can hardly contain significant amounts of different amino acids. The advantage of pre-workout booster capsules, however, is that you can take them anywhere with a sip from your water bottle - even on the subway or in the parking lot in front of the gym. So if you're going straight from college or work to your workout, capsule products might be more convenient for you. With powder products, you have a much wider choice, and the price-performance ratio is usually better.

What side effects are possible?

Every product that has an effect also has side effects. With workout boosters, however, the potential side effects are very manageable. The only ingredients that can trigger any noticeable side effects at all are caffeine and beta alanine.

Caffeine can trigger hypernervousness and - in particularly sensitive individuals - finger tremors, and caffeine consumption in the evening can also make it difficult to fall asleep. Another side effect of caffeine that is not immediate, but should nevertheless be noted, is that regular consumption quickly leads to habituation. The stimulating effect then wears off. Consequence: the booster no longer "pops". However, it is then not advisable to increase the dose; instead, a caffeine break of several weeks should be taken.

Beta Alanine may cause temporary mild skin tingling, which is harmless. The reason for the tingling is the vasodilatory effect of beta alanine, which is accompanied by alternating sensations of warmth and cold on the surface of the skin.

Due to their very small spectrum of side effects, EU Workout Boosters can be consumed over and over again (but not during every workout) without hesitation. The situation is different with hardcore boosters: Here, it is important to be more cautious when consuming them.

Which is the best pre-workout booster?

Which one is the best workout booster cannot be said across the board. If the amount of stimulating and performance-enhancing substances is greater than the amount of flavoring substances, that's already a good time. Basically, however, the best workout booster for you is the one that works best for you! If you generally drink a lot of coffee and have a high caffeine tolerance threshold, you should buy a pre-workout booster that contains a lot of caffeine (>300 mg per serving). If you are not a coffee drinker, you need a booster with less caffeine, and if you often train for longer than 60 minutes, then you should prefer a booster with guarana, because this caffeine variant is longer effective compared to pure caffeine.

Incidentally, there are various forums and test portals on the web where the advantages and disadvantages of individual booster products are listed and discussed in detail. One of the most popular portals is boosterjunkies.com - here you can get information about many products available on the market. Boosterjunkies also publishes ranking lists ("best pre-workout booster", "best pump booster" etc.) time and again.

Pre Workout Booster FAQs

  • Is it possible to overdose a pre-workout booster?

  •  Are pre-workout boosters also suitable for women?

  •  Can you make up your own workout booster?

  •  Do pre-workout boosters promote muscle building?

  •  How many calories do pre-workout boosters have?

Is it possible to overdose a pre-workout booster?

Yes, of course. What happens then? Nothing bad. Too much caffeine dose can cause dizziness, heart palpitations and stomach cramps; too much beta alanine can cause a chills-like cold sensation. It is recommended that you do not exceed the dosage recommendations on the can labels. If your booster doesn't really wake you up after the fourth or fifth dose (because your caffeine tolerance threshold has risen, see above), take longer breaks between boosted workouts.

Are pre-workout boosters also suitable for women?

Yes. Workout boosters have the same effect on women as they do on men, and since EU boosters do not contain hormones or hormone-like substances, they can easily be consumed by women. Female athletes who are significantly lighter than the "norm man" (body weight: 75 kg) should, however, start with a reduced dose or with only three-quarters of a scoop per mixed drink as a precaution. The European Food Safety Authority gives a recommendation of 180 mg as the maximum single dose of caffeine for a 60 kg woman.

Can you make up your own workout booster?

In general, yes, but there is no advantage to doing so, at least in the case of powder products. Industrially produced booster powders are usually cheaper than the corresponding amounts of the individual ingredients. However, if you use the (more expensive) pre-workout supplements in capsule form anyway, you can put together your own personal capsule supplementation for workout: Caffeine capsules as well as beta-alanine capsules, L-arginine capsules, AAKG tablets and creatine capsules are available in online retailers - and here in the store, of course. So if you prefer other quantity compositions than the compositions in ready-made booster products or if you want to supplement your booster supplementation e.g. with BCAAs, EAAs or ginseng capsules, you have all options here.

Do pre-workout boosters promote muscle building?

Yes, they do - but not directly. Although workout boosters contain many useful amino acids that are conducive to muscle building, since boosters should not be taken daily, the amino acid supply aspect of booster consumption is negligible. However, pre-workout boosters can turn virtually any workout into a highly effective workout, so overall muscle building is better stimulated over several weeks. In addition, pre-workout boosters, just like pump boosters, increase the pump during training, which means that the muscles are better supplied with blood and nutrients. This also favors the build-up.

How many calories do pre-workout boosters contain?

Unfortunately, most booster package labels don't list energy content - even those that list each ingredient and quantity. In general, however, it can be said that pre-workout boosters hardly contain any calories. They are usually sweetened with sweeteners (not sugar), and the calorie content of the amino acids they contain is negligible. A ready-mixed booster drink has a maximum of 25 kcal, typically it is less.
