Protein

It is the No. 1 building material for muscles: Protein, colloquially also called "egg white". What many athletes do not know: Protein is not only important for muscle building, but also for muscle maintenance. This means that a high protein intake is also beneficial when the only goal is to prevent the existing muscle mass from degrading, for example during energy-sapping endurance training or during a weight-reduction diet.

Protein powder or protein powder is therefore the most basic of all dietary supplements. We have protein powders of every category from all well-known brands in our program - from classic whey protein to multicomponent protein to casein protein with retard effect. Whether fruity, chocolaty or neutral-tasting, whether extremely high-quality or very affordable, whether of animal origin or vegan: everyone will find what they prefer. Just click through the offer!

How does protein work?

Along with carbohydrates and fats, protein is one of the macronutrients that provide energy. In sports nutrition, protein, also known as egg white, enjoys a very high status. An adequate supply of protein plays an important role in body composition (especially muscle mass) and thus also in physical performance. Scientifically proven are the following effects of protein

  • Proteins support muscle growth
  • Proteins contribute to the maintenance of muscle mass
  • Proteins contribute to the preservation of normal bones

For these reasons, proteins, which are composed of individual amino acids, are an important part of fitness nutrition and are rightly considered the #1 nutrient in sports nutrition!

Why is protein powder useful for me?

In general, the following applies: Protein requirements should be met primarily through protein-rich foods (e.g. eggs, fish, meat and dairy products). The German Society for Nutrition e.V. (DGE) recommends a protein intake of 0.8 g per kilogram of body weight for the average adult.

Meeting requirements or maintaining a positive protein balance plays a particularly important role in building muscle. Experts see an increased protein requirement for ambitious and performance-oriented athletes. Renowned institutions of sports science therefore recommend consuming up to 2.0 g of protein per kilogram of body weight daily. Especially in diet phases in which there is a calorie deficit, an adequate intake of protein is important for muscle maintenance.

In a hectic and stressful everyday life, it is unfortunately not always easy to consume the recommended amount of protein completely through the diet. Therefore, protein powder is ideal to close supply gaps and thus not jeopardize personal goals (e.g. muscle building).

In addition, protein powder offers other decisive advantages. For example, the targeted use of protein powder facilitates calorie management, since a high amount of protein can be ingested via protein shakes without significant amounts of other calorie-heavy nutrients (carbohydrates and especially fat).

In addition, protein powder can be prepared easily, quickly and almost anywhere to a protein shake. Only protein powder, a shaker and some water are needed to ensure the protein supply. Therefore, protein shakes are ideal as a snack in between the main meals.

Which protein is the best?

This question is impossible to answer properly with a specific product recommendation. To find the optimal protein powder, it makes sense to answer the following questions:

  • What goal do I want to support with the protein powder?

Supplementing with protein powder makes sense for different objectives. Although all protein powders have in common that they contribute to building and maintaining muscle mass, this does not mean that they are equally suitable for all objectives.

For example, if you want to replace meals with a Whey protein to support your diet or weight loss, you can make a better choice. While Whey Protein is a high-quality protein with functional properties, nutrition experts refer to Whey Protein as an insulinogenic protein (in part because of its high content of the amino acid L-leucine). This means that the consumption of Whey Protein is associated with a high insulin output. However, it is precisely this that should be avoided in a diet (exception directly after intensive training load). Compared to Whey Protein, the insulin increase after the consumption of casein is lower, which is why casein protein is better suited as a meal replacement in a diet.

Why buy Casein Protein?

✓ Long-lasting protein supply

✓ Excellent in cutting phases (muscle maintenance)

✓ Ideal for taking before bedtime

✓ Suitable as a meal replacement (e.g. diet)

When do I want to take the protein?

The time of ingestion represents a very decisive criterion in the choice of the optimal protein powder. Since all protein powders have in part very different absorption properties, the following principle applies for optimal results: the right protein at the right time!

If you want to ensure muscle supply after exercise, go for Whey Protein or Soy Protein (fast digesting). After all, important regeneration and build-up processes take place in the muscle tissue after training. If, on the other hand, you want to support the muscle supply overnight, your choice falls on casein protein (slowly digestible).

Why buy Whey Protein?

✓ Fast digestible protein

✓ High biological value

✓ High insulin index

✓ Optimal after training (post-workout).

What is my monthly budget look like?

Due to the different functionalities, it may make sense to use two different protein powders for optimal training results. Of course, this decision depends on the financial scope or the available budget.

If you have to be satisfied with only one protein supplement for financial reasons, you should choose the absolute must-have among protein powders with Whey Protein (vegan alternative Soy Protein). The particularly high-quality and quickly digestible proteins are suitable for all objectives to take after training / sports!

Those who want to support an optimal protein supply at different times of the day are optimally served with a duo of Whey Protein and Casein Protein. While the quickly digestible Whey Protein with a high insulin index is optimally suited for consumption after training/sport, the consumption of Casein Protein is recommended as a snack or as the last meal of the day before going to bed due to its slow digestion properties. Especially for snacks, multi-component proteins are ideal. These proteins consist of several individual proteins (e.g. whey, egg, soy, casein). By cleverly combining different protein sources, it is possible to increase the protein quality (biological value).

What advantages do multicomponent proteins offer?

✓ Mixture of different protein sources

✓ Fast and slow digestion properties.

✓ Possibly higher biological value than single protein

✓ Optimal for the "basic supply" of protein

Which protein tastes the best?

Even though the quality and the effect of the protein should be in the foreground, the taste also plays an important role. Finally, protein shakes should be taken regularly to achieve the desired effects.

The good news is that many high-quality protein powders nowadays taste almost like milkshakes that contain sugar and fat. However, as we all know, tastes can differ. Basically, however, it can be stated that protein powders from animal protein sources (e.g. Whey or Casein) are perceived as tasting significantly better than protein powders from plant sources (e.g. soy or rice).

Buying the right protein - what else should I look out for?

Food allergies, for example, can be another factor you should consider when choosing the right protein powder. For example, if you have tolerance problems with lactose (lactose intolerance), you should not consider milk proteins (Whey & Casein). However: since Whey Protein Isolate contains only very small amounts of lactose due to the special manufacturing process, this protein is well tolerated by many lactose intolerant people. Otherwise, it is possible to resort to vegetable or vegan protein powders (e.g. soy protein).

It is also often worth taking a closer look at the composition of the protein. For example, some Whey Proteins consist of different types of Whey Protein (Whey Protein Concentrate, Whey Protein Hydrolisate, Whey Protein Isolate). These mixtures differ in their high quality. If a Whey Protein has, for example, a high proportion of Whey Protein Isolate (WPI), this is a sign of quality.

Athletes who live vegan face a special challenge, as they can only resort to plant-based protein powders. However, with soy protein isolate, rice protein and vegetable multicomponent proteins, high-quality protein powders are also available to them!

Vegetable protein powder for vegans - soy protein isolate

✓ Highest quality plant-based protein

✓ Fast digestion properties

✓ Ideal alternative to Whey Protein

✓ Perfect after training (post-workout)
