Maca / Tribulus Terrestris

Tribulus Terrestris is probably one of the most polarizing substances on the sports nutrition supplement market: Many athletes - especially bodybuilders - swear by Tribulus Terrestris, and the number of supplements with Tribulus Terrestris available on the net is almost unmanageable. On the other hand, the efficacy of Tribulus Terrestris is repeatedly questioned; in some bodybuilding forums, Tribulus is even infamous as a blender substance. Nevertheless, even the consumer protection agency points out that for athletes who participate in doping-tested competitions, the consumption of Tribulus preparations can be risky - which clearly speaks against the Blender assessment. So what's true? Find out here what Tribulus Terrestris is really all about and who should consider buying Tribulus Terrestris!

Tribulus Terrestris: A promising plant extract

WHAT IS TRIBULUS TERRESTRIS?

Tribulus Terrestris is the Latin name for a herbaceous plant that belongs to the yoke-leaf family. Its German name is "Erd-Burzeldorn" or "earth star". The plant grows in subtropical regions and is found in Asia and Africa as well as in Southern Europe. It first attracted attention at the beginning of the 1980s, although it has been known in Europe since the 1960s - but in the 1980s sensational studies were carried out in Bulgaria with Tribulus Terrestris to improve libido and sexual performance in men. The studies concluded that the earth star can significantly improve sexual body functions. A few years later, the first Tribulus preparations appeared on the dietary supplement market. However, they were not advertised as pure aphrodisiacs, but as testosterone boosters with all-round effects.

EFFECT OF TRIBULUS TERRESTRIS

In the years that followed, Tribulus Terrestris was the subject of numerous other empirical studies. The background to this was - or is - that the plant contains a large number of bioactive substances, including alkaloids, flavonoids and saponins. Especially the saponins are interesting for scientists and supplement manufacturers, because these secondary plant substances are similar in their chemical structure to the steroid hormones in animal organisms and in the human body. The saponin spirostanol dioscin, found in Tribulus Terrestris, for example, has long been used by the pharmaceutical industry as a raw material for the production of steroid drugs. The hypothesis that Tribulus could be a healthy alternative to anabolic steroids was therefore obvious. Accordingly, it was investigated if the consumption of Tribulus

  • to increase training performance in bodybuilding and to promote muscle building,
  • to regulate blood sugar levels,
  • to strengthen potency in men,
  • to increase desire in women or
  • drainage

can serve. Result: Tribulus Terrestris proved to be beneficial for all of the aforementioned application goals in the studies conducted - so much for the good news. The bad news: Many of the studies were not conducted on humans, and mostly not by independent scientific institutes, but by supplement manufacturers. This is especially true for the question of the muscle-building effect: Only one study confirmed this effect, and this study came from the manufacturer of the Bulgarian Tribulus preparation Tribestan®.

WHAT IS REALLY PROVEN - AND WHAT IS NOT

So as promising as the study results from the 1990s and 2000s may be at first glance, their validity is questionable. More recent studies paint a mixed picture.

Increase of the testosterone level

Tribulus Terrestris has been shown to increase LH (luteinizing hormone) by up to 70%. Luteinizing hormone in turn controls endogenous testosterone production. In human studies, however, no significant increase in testosterone levels has been demonstrated by Tribulus supplementation. It should be noted, however, that the subjects of these studies always had healthy testosterone production. Even the manufacturers of Tribulus preparations emphasize that Tribulus Terrestris can not raise testosterone levels above normal levels anyway. However, the plant can possibly ensure that a suppressed testosterone production (due to high training or everyday stress or due to previous anabolic abuse) returns to normal.

Increasing muscle mass and strength

Reliable studies on the muscle-building effect of Tribulus Terrestris are not yet available. There is a study from 2000 (J. Antonio et al.: "The effects of Tribulus terrestris on body composition and exercise performance in resistance-trained males" - International journal of sport nutrition and exercise metabolism), which did not show any muscle-building effect, but in this study only an extremely low Tribulus dose of 3 mg per kilo body weight was used. However, effective daily doses are at least 750 mg according to manufacturer recommendations.

Improvement of potency and sexual desire

After the first Bulgarian studies in the 1980s, other studies also came to the conclusion that Tribulus Terrestris can improve both libido (in men and in women) and erectile function (in men). However, the extent to which the improvement in male potency is due to a change in hormones or merely to improved blood flow to the penis has not been clarified. In menopausal women, Tribulus in high doses (500-1,500 mg) also caused an improvement in ovulation and an increase in sexual desire.

Blocking carbohydrate absorption

Tribulus Terrestris has the property of inhibiting certain enzymes in the intestine that are responsible for the absorption of carbohydrates from food. In particular, the enzyme alpha-amylase, which is responsible for the absorption of simple sugars, is blocked. In a clinical study conducted with diabetic patients, Tribulus Terrestris correspondingly lowered after-meal blood glucose levels and improved long-term cholesterol levels. Tribulus preparations are therefore also well suited for diet-supporting supplementation.

Drainage

Since Tribulus Terrestris causes an increased excretion of chloride and of sodium - but not of potassium - the plant has a diuretic effect. At high dosages, this effect may even be equivalent to the effect of medicinal dehydrating agents.

INTAKE AND DOSAGE

Tribulus Terrestris is usually sold as an extract in capsule form. However, there are also products in powder form. Both dosage forms have advantages and disadvantages. The advantage of powder is that the extract is offered here in pure form - that is, without fillers, without added other active ingredients and especially without a capsule shell. The disadvantage is that loose powder is not as easy to dose. In addition, tribulus extract tastes decidedly bitter; stirring tribulus powder into a drink does not make the drink any tastier, to say the least. Capsules are easier to dose and less complicated to take, but most capsule products also contain additives. With products from renowned manufacturers - such as Peak Tribulus Terrestris, Olimp Tribusteron, Krause Hof Tribulus or Haya Labs Tribulus Terrestris - this is not a problem; the additives here are usually limited to zinc and harmless fillers such as magnesium stearate. However, Tribulus products from unknown manufacturers in Asia may also contain prohormones and thus represent tangible doping. The consumer advice center therefore warns: "Dietary supplements for athletes from unsafe sources often contain banned substances in addition to the specified substances. Particularly in the case of substances whose effect is questionable, such as Tribulus Terrestris, the risk is out of all proportion to the benefit. It cannot be ruled out that products containing Tribulus Terrestris contain undisclosed anabolic or androgenic steroids."

As for dosage, if you want to achieve more than a placebo effect, you should consume around 1 g of Tribulus extract per day, with a minimum of 750 mg. Most capsule products are also dosed accordingly. A product that contains less than 600 mg of tribulus extract per capsule does not have to be bad because of this. As a buyer you should only know that you then have to take several capsules a day. The duration of use is not subject to any restrictions; Tribulus can be supplemented permanently. An observable effect occurs after four weeks at the earliest.

WHO SHOULD BUY TRIBULUS TERRESTRIS?

Tribulus Terrestris is not only a topic in bodybuilding. Supplementation with the earth star is rather a possibility for all men and women to whom one of the following points (or several points) applies or apply:

  • - Feeling of hormone production not running optimally
  • - Poor regeneration
  • - Performance plateau during training
  • - Sexual listlessness, possibly coupled with erectile dysfunction
  • - Lack of dietary progress
  • - Unwanted water retention

Tribulus is also interesting for older athletes, because the plant not only causes an increased LH release. Its saponins also increase the sensitivity of FSH receptors (= receptors for follicle-stimulating hormone), which otherwise decreases with aging.

Athletes who have worked with anabolic steroids in earlier times or even more recently can try to bring their gonadal control loop back on track with Tribulus Terrestris. It should be noted that Tribulus is not comparable to anabolic steroids such as extreme muscle builder products in terms of effect: The testosterone level can be raised by Tribulus Terrestris at best back to the level that the respective athlete in a healthy state without negative accompanying circumstances (lack of sleep, increased stress, strict diet, etc.) had or normally has. As the experiences of many users show, this also works very well in practice. However, if you buy Tribulus Terrestris with the expectation of mutating into a testosterone-boosting muscle man within a few weeks, you will certainly be disappointed. This probably also explains the many negative entries on the subject of earth-root thorn in the weight training forums on the Internet. However, this is also due to the many false advertising statements that describe the plant as a kind of legal doping for bodybuilding.

SIDE EFFECTS

Except for the diuretic effect of the Earth Star (which is not so much a side effect as a desired effect), there are no known side effects. Especially such side effects as often occur when taking anabolic steroids do not exist with Tribulus Terrestris - prostate, liver and heart are therefore not damaged in any way or not stimulated to pathological growth. Extremely high dosage (>2 g per day) may only cause temporary stomach discomfort, caused by the bitter substances contained in the extract. Only diabetics have to be careful: Since Tribulus Terrestris can hinder the absorption of sugar and generally has a blood sugar-lowering effect, diabetics - in order to exclude interactions with diabetes medications - should better refrain from taking Tribulus preparations.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN BUYING

What should you look for when buying Tribulus Terrestris? Decisive for the effectiveness of a Tribulus preparation is the saponin content. The saponins are found mainly in the leaves of the plant, less in the fruits. Tribulus extract obtained from the fruits or from the root therefore contains fewer saponins. In general, the amount of saponins varies anyway depending on the geographical origin of the plant - Bulgarian Tribulus is considered the richest in saponins. However, the labels of most tribulus products do not indicate the origin of the plants used in each case. Therefore, the saponin standardization in percent has become established: This indicates the percentage of an extract that consists of saponins. For example, if a label reads "1,000 mg Tribulus Terrestris per capsule (45 % standardized)", this means that a single capsule contains only 450 mg of effective saponins. High-quality preparations have a degree of standardization of 80 or 90 %.

FAQS TRIBULUS TERRESTRIS

> Is the intake of Tribulus Terrestris doping?

> Is Tribulus Terrestris also suitable for women?

> Is Tribulus Terrestris more of a mass builder or more of a dietary supplement?

> Is Tribulus Terrestris vegan?

IS TAKING TRIBULUS TERRESTRIS DOPING?

Usually not. Tribulus Terrestris is not on the WADA list of banned substances, and if a Tribulus product really only contains what is listed on the label (and as long as no problematic ingredients are mentioned there), the intake is not considered doping. As already explained above, the purity of some products - especially if they are sold internationally via amazon - may be doubted. The Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) has classified Tribulus Terrestris in group D. This group contains substances that are suitable for use in sports. This lists substances that are banned for athletes or which are associated with a high risk of contamination by banned substances. If you want to be on the safe side, you should only buy Tribulus products that are on the Cologne List.

IS TRIBULUS TERRESTRIS ALSO SUITABLE FOR WOMEN?

Yes. Women benefit just as much as men from the dehydrating and blood sugar-lowering effects of the earth star, and Tribulus can also be useful for women in terms of a more fulfilling sex life. There is even a study in which women were able to achieve orgasm more frequently with Tribulus supplementation (Postigo S. et al [2016]: "Assessment of the Effects of Tribulus Terrestris on Sexual Function of Menopausal Women." PubMed PMID: 26902700). There was no significant increase in testosterone levels. So women do not need to worry about upsetting their hormone balance with Tribulus supplements.

IS TRIBULUS TERRESTRIS MORE OF A MASS BUILDER OR MORE OF A DIETARY SUPPLEMENT?

Neither. Tribulus Terrestris can, if necessary, ensure that suppressed endogenous testosterone production recovers. The plant can also ensure that strong blood sugar fluctuations are absent (which promote cravings) and that the excess tissue water is flushed out. While all of the above effects are helpful in bodybuilding, Tribulus Terrestris cannot be considered a mass-building supplement - nor can it be considered a dietary supplement.

IS TRIBULUS TERRESTRIS VEGAN?

The plant itself is, of course, vegan - whether that also applies to Tribulus supplements depends on what is added to the supplements in each case. For capsule products, it also depends on the capsule material: Supplement capsules are often made from animal gelatin, so accordingly they are not vegan. In the meantime, however, many manufacturers also have their capsules made from vegetable cellulose. Athletes who follow a vegan diet should carefully study the label of their chosen product.
