Kre-Alkalyn

When Kre-Alkalyn appeared on the market for supplements at the beginning of the 2000s, a murmur literally went through the fitness scene - because the age of the commercially available creatine monohydrate seemed to be over. Kre-Alkalyn "rewrote the history of creatine," the manufacturer All American EFX announced at the time, and quite a few creatine consumers proved him right. But does Kre-Alkalyn really work better than creatine monohydrate in every way? After all, Kre-Alkalyn has not yet displaced creatine monohydrate from the market. Read here under which circumstances Kre-Alkalyn is actually beneficial and who should buy Kre-Alkalyn!

Kre-Alkalyn: buffered creatine

What is Kre-Alkalyn?

Kre-Alkalyn is a special form of creatine. It was developed by the US American Brian Andrews, the founder of the EFX brand and author of various publications on creatine. Officially, the Kre-Alkalyn era began on June 4, 2002, when Brian Andrews filed a patent application for the new creatine form under patent no. 6,399,661. Since then, "Kre-Alkalyn®" has been a trademarked name. A year later, Andrews joined All American Nutrition Corporation, where he founded the sub-label "All American EFX". Kre-Alkalyn is still only produced under this label (the original product name is "EFX Kre-Alkalyn®") and may not be used by other manufacturers - unless they have entered into a corresponding licensing agreement with the All American Nutrition Corporation, such as the European company Olimp Laboratories Sp. z o.o. However, the Weider Corporation, for example, has now developed its own Kre-Alkalyn variant (Weider Krea-Genic), which behaves chemically exactly like the original Kre-Alkalyn from EFX. Kre-Alkalyn is primarily available in capsule form; however, powder products are now also available.

What makes Kre-Alkalyn special?

But what is so special about Kre-Alkalyn, and why should athletes buy Kre-Alkalyn instead of creatine monohydrate? To answer this question, one must look at the chemistry of the supplement: Creatine monohydrate is not particularly stable chemically - it breaks down to creatinine in a liquid environment. (Creatinine is a creatine "waste product," so to speak, that the body can't do anything with. It is also essentially blamed for the well-known creatine side effects such as bloating and malaise). In an acidic environment, this decomposition occurs particularly quickly, which is why orally ingested creatine always only partially "arrives" in the muscles. A certain part is neutralized each time by the stomach acid. Kre-Alkalyn is now a creatine form that is combined with sodium. The sodium makes the creatine alkaline (its pH increases from about 6.9 to at least 12) - with the consequence that the stomach acid must first "regulate" it down to stomach acid level (pH 1-1.5). The time gained in this way means that the creatine molecules remain stable in the stomach for much longer. The sodium thus acts as a kind of buffer. That is why Kre-Alkalyn is also called "buffered creatine".

Buffered creatine thus has the advantage that it does not break down so quickly in the stomach, so it can be completely absorbed. This results in the following:

  1. Orally supplied Kre-Alkalyn benefits the muscles completely - nothing is lost through premature decay.
  2. Kre-Alkalyn is therefore more effective than creatine monohydrate. Athletes who supplement Kre-Alkalyn can work accordingly with smaller dosages (compared to creatine monohydrate).
  3. Because of the smaller dosages, the likelihood of side effects (such as indigestion, bloating, and malaise) is also reduced.

The bottom line is that Kre-Alkalyn is better tolerated than creatine monohydrate. Furthermore, the water retention that normally accompanies creatine supplementation is less severe with Kre-Alkalyn, or virtually absent. This MAY be an advantage - namely if the inclined user does not want to become heavier (in order not to slip into a higher class at an upcoming competition). But it can also be a disadvantage - if the user was looking forward to a slightly plumper look. In terms of pure effect - in terms of strength performance and power in training - there is no significant difference between Creatine Monohydrate and Kre-Alkalyn from EFX.

Criticism

Every new invention has proponents and critics - of course, this also applies to supplement inventions like Kre-Alkalyn. The proponents, which primarily include those who make a profit with Kre-Alkalyn (i.e. manufacturers and their cooperation partners, distributors, advertising athletes and influencers), praise Kre-Alkalyn as a highly effective new top supplement. In their opinion, creatine monohydrate has had its day since 2002. The critics, on the other hand, point out that Kre-Alkalyn is actually nothing more than creatine monohydrate, and that, gram for gram, it doesn't work any better. In addition, the slightly better tolerability of Kre-Alkalyn is offset by a significantly higher price, because of course All American EFX makes his patent pay well.

In any case, there are a few points of criticism that cannot be dismissed out of hand:

  1. Hardly more stable than creatine monohydrate.
It's true that creatine breaks down quickly to creatinine in the stomach - but "quickly" is a relative term. A study conducted in 2007 found that creatine monohydrate remains 99 percent stable in an acidic solution (pH 1) for 120 minutes. So it's safe to assume that when supplementing with normal creatine monohydrate, well over 90 percent of each serving reaches the muscles. This makes it questionable how much more effective Kre-Alkalyn actually is.

  2. Expensive sodium
The sodium used to buffer creatine in the Kre-Alkalyn formula is sodium carbonate - basically nothing more than baking soda. Baking soda is not an expensive raw material; nevertheless, Kre-Alkalyn products are priced much higher than creatine monohydrate products.

  3. Fewer side effects only due to lower dosage
Since the smaller side effect spectrum of Kre-Alkalyn is only related to the smaller doses, the question arises whether the side effects of a creatine monohydrate cure could not simply be eliminated by smaller doses. The fact that the smaller doses would then be less effective is unlikely in view of the considerable acid resistance of creatine monohydrate (see 1.).

Consumption

The body can absorb a daily amount of creatine of about 3 g - accordingly, most Kre-Alkalyn products are also dosed. But beware: Because Kre-Alkalyn capsules consist not only of creatine, but of creatine plus sodium carbonate, the amount of ingredients in a daily dose is usually greater than 3g. For example, in EFX's Kre-Alkalyn Pro product, a daily dose (3 capsules) contains 3,600 mg of Kre-Alkalyn, but only slightly more than 3,000 mg of that is pure creatine.

For Kre-Alkalyn of EFX applies, however, as for all other creatine-containing supplements, that the intake should be with plenty of liquid, preferably water. The more water that is included, the better. Drinking a full 0.4-liter glass when swallowing capsules is therefore better than drinking only a 0.25-liter glass.

Conclusion: Who should buy Kre-Alkalyn?

First of all, Kre-Alkalyn has the same indication of use as any other creatine form: it is a permitted effective means of increasing physical performance in sports. Thus, it is suitable for all athletes who want to improve their performance in training or competition. However, opinions differ as to whether Kre-Alkalyn is generally more recommendable than creatine monohydrate.

In favor of Kre-Alkalyn are the lower probability of side effects, the less complicated intake (since Kre-Alkalyn is mainly sold in capsule form) and the absence of water retention. The only thing really speaking against Kre-Alkalyn is the comparatively high price of EFX products - and the fact that Kre-Alkalyn does not have a better effect compared to creatine monohydrate. But you don't necessarily have to buy an EFX product if you want to try Kre-Alkalyn: The company Olimp also sells capsule products with original Kre-Alkalyn (e.g. Olimp Kre Alkalyn 1500, Olimp Kre Alkalyn 2500); the Kre-Alkalyn® logo is printed on the package in each case. Another alternative are the Krea-Genic products from Weider (Weider Maximum Kre-Genic 120 capsules, Weider Maximum Kre-Genic Powder 554 g). They are also "buffered" and have the same benefits as EFX's Kre-Alkalyn products.

So who should buy Kre-Alkalyn? Athletes who have sensitive stomachs or digestive systems and who appreciate the simplicity of capsule products (compared to powder products). However, these athletes should not be cost-cutters.
