Other Creatine Forms

In addition to creatine monohydrate, Kre-Alkalyn and creatine HCL, there are several other creatine forms on the market. Although none of them differs fundamentally in its effect from the original form - ultimately all creatine forms are based on creatine monohydrate - each has its specific advantages. To what extent these are actually of importance in everyday training depends on the constitution of the individual user and on his personal goals. Get an overview of the most common variants here and then decide whether you should buy other creatine forms.

Other forms of creatine: the most common variants at a glance

What other forms of creatine are there?

Until the early 1990s, creatine (alternative spelling: creatine) was a kind of "secret recipe" used only by a few competitive athletes on an experimental basis. The first officially documented use of creatine in international sports was in British sprinters and hurdlers during the 1992 Olympics. However, after Linford Christie, the 1992 British 100 m Olympic champion, publicly admitted to taking creatine, interest in the substance skyrocketed. In 1993, the company Experimental & Applied Sciences (EAS) was one of the first to market creatine monohydrate as a supplement. During the following 20 years, creatine then experienced a boom that basically continues to this day. Several supplement manufacturers created further developments of creatine monohydrate and registered them as patents; among them, Kre-Alkalyn and creatine HCL in particular stood out from the crowd. In addition to these two variants, however, several other forms became established - such as creatine alpha-ketoglutarate (creatine AKG), creatine ethyl ester (CEE), creatine pyruvate and tri-creatin malate.

Creatine Alpha Ketoglutarate (Creatine AKG)

Creatine alpha-ketoglutarate is a compound of creatine and alpha-ketoglutarate, a derivative of glutaric acid. In this compound, alpha-ketoglutarate acts as a "transport vehicle" for creatine and ensures that more creatine molecules can be transported into the muscles per unit of time. This effect could also be achieved by adding simple carbohydrates (sugar), but this would then also be accompanied by an increased calorie intake. Creatine AKG is therefore a creatine variant that has a better bioavailability than creatine monohydrate, but is not higher in calories. An example product for creatine AKG is PEAK Creatine AKG 160 Caps.

Creatine Ethyl-Ester (CEE))

Creatine Ethyl-Ester (CEE) is esterified creatine - that is, creatine monohydrate with an ester attached. Esters are organic compositions formed by the reaction of carboxylic acid and alcohol, and in particular improve the fat solubility of a substance. The idea behind esterification of creatine is to optimize the dissolution of creatine in fat-containing beverages such as milk or protein shakes. Apart from this, CEE has no significant advantages over other forms of creatine.

Creatine Pyruvate

Creatine Pyruvate is a compound that consists of 60% creatine monohydrate and 40% pyruvate. (Pyruvates are salts and esters of pyruvic acid.) The main advantage of this creatine form is that it is more water-soluble than creatine monohydrate. Creatine pyruvate can therefore also be used to make creatine effervescent tablet products. A scientific study on the effectiveness of creatine pyruvate (Jäger et al. [2007]) also concluded that creatine pyruvate leads to slightly higher creatine plasma concentrations in the blood; however, this does not cause significant absorption advantages over creatine monohydrate. An example product for creatine pyruvate is Hammer Labz Crea Max 280 g.

Tri-Creatine Malate (TCM)

Tri-Creatine Malate (TCM) is a creatine form in which three creatine molecules are bound to one molecule of malic acid (malate). Malic acid occurs naturally in the body - just like creatine - and is supposed to make creatine more tolerable. It is also popularly used by the food industry as an antioxidant. The digestive problems that some creatine users experience during a creatine regimen are said not to occur with TCM. An example product for Tri-Creatine Malate (TCM) is Olimp TCM Mega Caps.

Conclusion: Why should you buy other creatine forms?

Which creatine form one prefers as an athlete is basically a question of faith. Those who like to take creatine as a powder in a shake and do not want to stir or shake it for a long time are well advised to use creatine ethyl ester. Those who prefer to consume creatine before training (and therefore value rapid absorption) will be happier with creatine alpha-ketoglutarate, and those who get digestive problems from creatine monohydrate should try tri-creatin malate. What all forms of creatine have in common, however, is that they work well. The differences in effectiveness - if any - are not serious.
