Amino Acids

In addition to protein shakes, amino acid preparations in particular get the muscle build-up going. Their advantage lies in the rapid absorption: While the protein structures contained in a protein shake must first be broken down by the body, the protein structures in amino acid tablets or capsules are immediately available to the organism. You can therefore take the preparations directly before training and thus optimally supply your muscles with building materials during sports. Amino acids are not a substitute for protein powder - they are only a useful complement to it.

BCAAs (Branched Chained Amino Acids) play a special role among amino acid supplements: They provide the body with only the three essential amino acids leucine, isoleucine and valine. Studies have shown that high concentrations of these amino acids significantly promote anabolism (muscle building). In our store you will find amino acid and BCAA supplements in all known dosage forms, such as tablets, capsules and drinking liquids.

What are amino acids and what amino acids are there?

Without protein there is no life and without amino acids there are no proteins! As protein building blocks, amino acids are significantly involved in the construction of proteins. Amino acids are divided into proteinogenic and non-proteinogenic representatives. There are 20 proteinogenic amino acids, which are also components of our body proteins (muscles).

In addition, amino acids are divided into essential and non-essential amino acids. Amino acids whose intake through food is absolutely necessary (vital) are classified as essential. These protein building blocks cannot be formed independently by the human body. If there is a deficiency, this can among other things lead to the loss of muscle mass. The essential amino acids include:

  • L-Leucine
  • L-Valine
  • L-Isoleucine
  • L-Methionine
  • L-Threonine
  • L-Lysine
  • L-Tryptophan
  • L-Phenylalanine

Non-essential amino acids, on the other hand, are amino acids that can be produced independently by the human organism. A supply through the diet is therefore not mandatory. They include:

There is a lack of clarity with regard to the amino acid L-histidine, which is classified as essential by some experts, while other experts are of the opinion that L-histidine is non-essential. Incidentally, the term semi-essential is also often used. Semi-essential amino acids are those that only need to be supplied externally under certain conditions (conditionally vital, e.g. during growth or illness).

Which amino acids are useful for muscle building?

EAAs (essential amino acids) are among the most important amino acids for muscle building. Only when all essential amino acids are present in sufficient quantities it is possible to build new muscle mass. EAA supplements therefore contain all 8 essential amino acids, which are necessary for the buildup of proteins, which in turn contribute to the buildup and maintenance of muscle mass. Most people are able to consume sufficient protein or essential amino acids through a protein-rich diet. However, athletes who train intensively have an increased need for essential amino acids or proteins. If this need cannot be covered by the diet, it makes sense to supplement protein or EAAs.

Why buy EAAs?

✓ Rapid supply of vital amino acids.

✓ Elementary building blocks of proteins that contribute to muscle building & muscle maintenance.

✓ Optimal for low-calorie protein supply

✓ Rapid absorption into the organism

In addition, EAA supplements offer the advantage of providing essential amino acids in free form. While the EAAs from a protein-rich food must first be laboriously digested, the free amino acids from supplements are available very quickly. This is especially true for supplements in powder form, which are taken diluted in liquid.

In addition to EAAs, BCAAs have been among the most popular amino acid supplements for muscle building for many years. BCAAs (Branched Chain Amino Acids) are the branched-chain amino acids L-leucine, L-isoleucine and L-valine. L-leucine in particular is highly valued in sports nutrition. This is mainly due to the stimulating influence on protein synthesis, which can be found again and again in scientific studies.

The amino acids arginine and citrulline do not directly support muscle building, which is why they are no less popular among bodybuilders and other strength athletes. Both amino acids are associated with increased blood flow or muscle pump. Arginine is the sole precursor of nitric oxide (NO), which triggers vasodilatory processes in the human organism. Therefore, arginine should not be missing in any "pump booster"! The "pump" has no proven effect on muscle building, but still provides a very satisfying muscle feeling in the workout! Those who strive for pump and performance will find the optimal performance substrate in citrulline, because quite a few sports science studies indicate positive effects for improved strength and endurance performance. (1,2)

Why buy Arginine?

✓ Sole precursor of nitric oxide (NO).

✓ Is associated with increased blood flow ("pump effect").

✓ Arginine AKG for optimal bioavailability.

Amino Acids as powder, capsules or tablets - which dosage form makes the most sense?

Amino acids are basically offered in various dosage forms. Some amino acids are even offered both as powder and in capsule and pill form (e.g. BCAAs and EAAs). Each dosage form offers different advantages and disadvantages. Amino acids in powder form are dissolved in water and thus enter the organism very quickly. Amino acids in capsule form, on the other hand, take a little longer, as the capsule shell must first dissolve in the stomach. Amino acids from pills take the longest to be detectable in the blood, which in turn brings advantages in the long-term supply. Since tastes are known to differ, the tasteless capsules offer advantages for athletes who simply do not like amino acid drinks. In addition, capsules naturally impress with their fast and uncomplicated intake option, which is possible anywhere and at any time.

When should amino acids be taken?

The optimal time of intake depends primarily on the amino acid supplement in question. While BCAA and EAA supplements are primarily taken around workouts, amino acids that are said to have calming properties (e.g. L-tryptophan) are recommended to be taken before bedtime. The intake of amino acids such as arginine and citrulline, which are associated with muscle pump, is recommended exclusively before training (pre-workout).

The dosage form can also play an important role in connection with the optimal time of intake. For example, BCAAs and EAAs in powder form enter the bloodstream faster than tablets, which may make more sense shortly before training.

Buying the right amino acids - what else should I look out for?

Certain amino acids are offered in different forms, which differ in terms of bioavailability. Bioavailability indicates the extent and rate at which the amino acid enters the bloodstream. A good example of different bioavailability is arginine, which is offered, for example, as L-arginine as well as arginine AKG (AKG = alpha-ketoglutarate). Arginine AKG is said to have a better bioavailability compared to L-arginine, which is why it is the more potent arginine supplement in the eyes of many.

With a limited budget, it basically makes sense to first decide only for the most important amino acids. What these are, of course, depends primarily on the respective training goal and the nutritional situation. For muscle building, it makes sense to first supply yourself with EAAs before arginine supplements, for example, should be on the shopping list.
